Hand injuries are very common in workplace. While most of these injuries are resolved with first aid, it is important to understand that these injuries can affect more than just your hands. For example, cuts and scrapes can result in infection, so it is important to wear appropriate gloves for your task.
Many dangers await when working with electrical wiring… When wires are cut or stripped – you may be left with sharp edges that damage your skin. The insulation may contain chemicals that are not conducive to good health. The conduit may have sharp edges. The fixtures are formed from thin sheet metal, and may have sharp edges as well. The old fixtures may have some unknown dirt all over them, etc. Your work gloves are designed to protect you in all of these situations.
It is important to remember that the work gloves are not electrically rated, and should not be relied upon for live work (special gloves are needed for live work, along with other protective equipment), however, if a wire becomes energized due to an accident on an error, your work glove may still mean a difference between life and death by providing some resistance during the shock, and preventing a lock-on situation.
- Make sure to wear appropriate gloves for your work.
- Request replacements for worn out gloves.
- Always wear gloves when handling material or cutting/stripping wires.
Don’t forget to wear your gloves!
